Farewell to an Era: The Official Shutdown of the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace

Publish Date:
July 29, 2024, marks the official shutdown of the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace, concluding the ability for users to purchase new games, downloadable content (DLC), and other entertainment content directly from the Xbox 360 console or the Marketplace website. While existing owners can continue to download previously purchased games, the closure means that many digital-only titles will be permanently delisted, particularly those not compatible with newer Xbox consoles. Microsoft has been offering significant discounts on a variety of Xbox 360 titles leading up to the closure, with some games available for as little as a dollar.

Despite the shutdown, users will still be able to play their previously purchased games, including online multiplayer features, and can access backward-compatible Xbox 360 games through Xbox One and Series X|S consoles. The Microsoft Movies & TV app will also be discontinued, affecting access to any movies or shows purchased through that service on the Xbox 360.

To commemorate the closure, Microsoft has released nostalgic merchandise through the Xbox Gear Shop, including the Xbox 360 Heritage Collection, which features themed apparel celebrating the console’s legacy.
